About Us
Program for Research & Innovative Surgical Methods in oncology. PRISM is located in Kelowna, British Columbia. Our research is focused on transforming cancer surgery through precision, innovation, and compassion. We are pioneering gentler techniques, delivering chemotherapy before surgery to shrink tumours, launching clinical trials for breast cancer, melanoma, and thyroid cancer, and performing breakthrough procedures that prevent lymphedema. Because surgery touches 60% of cancer patients, every discovery we make ensures patients receive the right treatment at the perfect moment—at the right time, right here at home.

Our History
British Columbia has been well known for its’ excellent cancer outcomes, attributed in large part to the care provided at BC Cancer. While having excellent clinicians is essential, these results are a function of the research done within BC Cancer, which organizes and/or delivers the medical and radiation treatment throughout the province. One of the key pillars of cancer care, are the surgeons treating these patients. Kelowna and the Interior region of British Columbia were in need of a research program that addresses the needs of patients in the region.
In 2024, a number of donors came forward, including Ken and Gloria Sargent, a Kelowna couple who donated $1.5 million to establish the first-ever surgical oncology research program at BC Cancer – Kelowna. Their generosity immediately transformed Surgical Oncology research in the Interior, with the creation and renaming of the program to PRISM Oncology in 2026. Dr. Chris Baliski is the scientific, director of PRISM where he and a dedicated team of research support staff, nurses, and other collaborators have begun transforming Surgical Oncology research in the region. In their honour, BC Cancer named its Molecular Imaging and Therapy Suite after the Sargents.

The program supports clinical trials, innovation, and regionally focused research, with the goal ensuring the most up to date, and advanced surgical oncology care to patients in the region.

Thanks to the generosity of BC Cancer Foundation and their donors, PRISM is advancing innovative research that is improving cancer care across
British Columbia.

Medical Student
Parneet Deo
Parneet Deo is a second-year medical student at the University of British Columbia. During her first year, she joined the PRISM Oncology team through her FLEX block and continued her involvement after receiving a Student Summer Research Program (SSRP) grant. Her research focuses on understanding patient-reported outcomes following breast cancer surgery in the context of social determinants of health among patients in Southeastern British Columbia. Through this work, Parneet aims to better understand how quality of life changes after surgery and how these experiences can inform decision-making for patients considering surgical treatment. She is excited to continue working with the PRISM Oncology team and to contribute to advancing research in women's health.

Masters of Computer Science Student
Ruben Ispiryan
Ruben is a recent Computer Science graduate from the University of Waterloo and will be starting his Master's at UBCO this fall. His project centers on using AI to accurately estimate tumor volume from mammograms—work that feels both technically exciting and deeply meaningful. He feels incredibly fortunate to be joining the PRISM Oncology team, where he hopes to learn as much as possible from the experienced professionals around him. Since this is his first real exposure to healthcare, Ruben is looking forward to absorbing everything he can—about the field, the people, and how AI can make a real difference.
